Almost three years ago, a crew of volunteers transformed the former Northwoods Motel on Highway OO in Lake Hallie into a village of 14 tiny homes for adults needing transitional shelter.

Director Becky Piper has been planning Thanksgiving dinner for guests at The Hub for weeks. There is much to be thankful for, including the serendipity that led her to a partner and the support of a community.

In March of 2020, when the pandemic hit Wisconsin, Becky used that time at home to plan. She had imagined a place like The Hub while working with individuals who struggled with mental health and addiction. Many were unhoused. She recognized a need in the Chippewa Valley for people who are emerging from a crisis but who are not yet completely stable.

LAKE HALLIE — Mike Lawrence has led more than 40 mission trips to build houses for poor people in other countries.

The missions have taken the former Eau Claire builder to Haiti, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic over the past 13 years.

Despite the obvious positive impact of his efforts, people back home often would ask him why he didn’t devote his energy to helping people in need in the Chippewa Valley.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) - A non-profit organization in Chippewa Falls is helping those experiencing homelessness.

The Hub homeless services is a transitional community that was started in 2019 by Beck Piper. In April, The Hub became a reality when they purchased the Northwoods Motel as their new location. The design of the location are like mini homes, which can give residents some privacy and a sense of community at the same time.

Piper left her previous job as the homeless service coordinator for Chippewa County to peruse her dream of helping those in need.

When she started as the homelessness services coordinator for Chippewa County seven years ago, the job description was vague – basically only conveying a desire to help people – but she took her passion and heart for the role, rolled back her sleeves, and started digging for resources to improve the issue of homelessness in the area.
